Finger-Painting — A Beautiful Mess

December 13, 2008 By Laura 2 Comments

We’re really good at making messes! Such a beautiful mess this time though. And what fun making it! This time our mess was made in the way of finger-painting!

Christmas is fast approaching, and believe it or not, this whole mess is another home made gifts craft project.  It’ll be a very useful gift too.  But I can’t say what they’re turning out to be just yet. For now, just enjoy the colors!!  If you are like me, and colors make you happy….you’ll be loving this post.  If not, you’ll wonder what the point was with all these photos, all of which maybe look the same to you.  Because otherwise, I don’t have much else to say tonight.

I’d love to tell you what we were making, but it might spoil someone’s Christmas surprise. I was thinking after Christmas, I may make a post featuring the home-made gifts reveal…with photos of the finished products.  What do you think??  That is, if I’m still blogging on behalf of my family, and our days here.  I’m not sure if I should go bigger and louder in the new year – or shut the blog down altogether.  I’m at a crossroads. It’s all good.  Just not sure if I want to re-focus my energy here.

Anyway….hope all of your Christmas preparations are going smoothly.  And most importantly, that you are enjoying the season. It’s so easy to get lost, and forget what all the fuss is really about. I generally get lost easily…ask anyone. So my motto is….”keep it simple”. SO much more enjoyable and fulfilling, for all of us, when we keep Christmas simple.

Blessings to you. Thanks for dropping by.

Taco Soup Recipe

December 11, 2008 By Laura 1 Comment

taco soup recipe

Here’s a soup recipe that’ll be sure to warm your chilled bones.  If you love tacos, you’ll love this taco soup! I do love tacos, and I also love soup. Good soups – which are usually home made of course. I also LOVE Panera Bread’s Broccoli Cheddar Soup (and so do our kids). I had some today as a matter of fact. It was just the pick-me-up I needed in between the stores of a little Christmas shopping.  Ate it in a quiet van.  It was the weirdest experience! lol

Now I didn’t invent this Taco Soup recipe, but I did revise it a bit to make it…well, better!  No one needs as many beans as was in the original recipe, to start. Unless you just want a bowl of beans, with a little burger mixed in.  My kids keep asking me when I’m going to make my Vegetable Soup again. (That was another altered version of a recipe. )  But I just feel like that’s a spring/summer soup…when vegetables are fresh and more locally grown.  This is a heartier soup that suits winter meals, and they love this one too.  So here’s how I make it, and I hope you give it a try if it sounds good to you:

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. extra lean ground beef (I use 85%)
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 15.5 oz can pinto beans / undrained
  • 1 8 oz can *Green Giant Niblets Corn / undrained * (we use this brand because it’s sweet and and has snap)
  • 2 8 oz tomato sauce
  • 1 pkg. Taco Seasoning Mix
  • 1 1/2 C water
  • Shredded Cheddar Cheese

Brown beef with onions in large saucepan; drain.

Add all remaining ingredients except cheese; stir. It’s important NOT to drain the cans of beans and corn! That’s where some of the flavor and liquid comes from.  Bring to a boil. Simmer on medium-low for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. At this point it’s ready to eat really, but I like to turn it to low and let it continue to simmer, still stirring occasionally – letting all of the ingredients get to know each other a little better.

“Hello!”  “Hi there!”

taco soup recipe

Then just serve up in bowls, and top with as much shredded cheddar as you’d like.  We like a lot. : )

If you try it out, let us know how many gold spoons your family gave this recipe.  : )

Cocoa and Crafting

December 6, 2008 By Laura 1 Comment

We’ve been doing more crafting than usual around here lately, as Christmas gifts.  I’m way behind in blogging about them, but in thinking about that I realized in a different light….they are Christmas gifts!!  Surprise gifts, of course. Granted, the recipients,,,our extended family….rarely visit our blog. If ever.  But, you know, they MIGHT.  And we really don’t want to ruin their Christmas surprises.  So…..I guess I just won’t post the finished products, until maybe after Christmas, and if anyone concerned visits and guesses what we made, oh well!!

So for one of our first projects a few crafting Sunday’s ago, we were discussing what and how we were going to do what we were going to do.  The plan was to hand sew them, until my husband said,

“Well, why don’t we just bring up the sewing machine and figure out how to use it?”

(me)  “WHAT?  What sewing machine?  We don’t have a sewing machine! ”

(him) “Yes we do.  It’s downstairs in the basement.”

(me)  “We DO?!  Where did we get it?”

(him) “It was your mother’s”

After a moment of stunned silence and a confused stare, I think I ended up on the floor, laughing hysterically.  Outright bafflement hysterics.  WHY you ask??  Because TRUST ME, my mother never sewed a day in her life! In fact, she had one of those trigger gun things that shot plastic things to put a button back on.  And anyone reading this, who knew my mother, is probably laughing at just imagining my mother sitting at a sewing machine.  I loved my mother, God rest her soul.  But she was NEVER the sewing type! She was just not the real domestic kind.  In fact, neither am I, by genetic-nature, that is – believe it or not. My early years as a wife, was on the comical side. I loved this man, but really….did I really have to do all those things they do? I wanted to want to. But…where WAS the WANT to??  Only for him. You know? Love is a crazy thing. I had to grow THAT bone, and I DID! In time.  Granted, it’s still growing.  But I have found deep and abiding joy in things I never knew I could embrace.  In fact, I feel myself really…going back in time, if you will.  My husband has really noticed how I have evolved over the years.  In fact,  he actually called me “my little pioneer woman’” the other day.  And I think I gushed, “Real-lly?” Truth be told, I was beaming with pride. Because I am admiring their ways more and more every year.  Thus…hand making some gifts, I suppose.

So he goes downstairs, and low and behold, he comes up with a SINGER, and dusts it off.  Well I’ll be darned.  There it is.  I tried to remember seeing it before. In a closet maybe?  In my childhood basement? Hmmm.  Just not sure.   Anyway….he got to figuring the thing out, because he’s mechanical like that. And he was suddenly seeming to be MORE than enjoying it.  Can I just say?…..

Men and their toys!!

m

He showed {A} and I how it worked, …..and showed us.  And showed us some more.  He just didn’t want to give it up.  Finally, he let {A} in there to give it a whirl, and I did a few as well.  a

Then {A} happly sat down to do more too.  But Daddy was itching to get in there!  Seeing his hand??  Next thing we know, he tells her “OK, time’s up!!  It’s my turn.  Let me in there.”.  Maybe a little uncomfortable to announce this, but not as eager as he was to have another turn, apparently!! m1hand Oh ,,,,just look at the show-off sewing with one hand. Cute though, isn’t he??

all4

The little ones were helping too, on another part of the project.   They LOVE projects of any kind.  Family crafting is the most fun.  Usually. : )

o

Our little dolly, always willing to roll up her sleeves and get to work.

Maybe you can guess what we made on this day?  Probably.  The great thing is, besides getting one project done, is that we know how to sew with a machine now!  Granted, we’re not pros, but {A} may be before long.  She’s pretty ambitious at that machine on just about a daily basis.  You should see the the little things she’s made already!

Gosh….my girls, AND BOYS, just may get that genetic-domestic bone thing.

Last Frog Released

December 1, 2008 By Laura Leave a Comment

This special day is actually from back on October 25, when {A} released her last frog.  Festivities, other events, and work sort of prevented this from being posted about in a timely manner. Nonetheless, we couldn’t let November end, and get into all of the special times that December holds, without sharing this milestone moment with you.  Especially if you have been with us from the beginning, with {A}’s ambitious mission to study bullfrogs this year.  If you have not, you are welcome to catch up, if interested, with the help of these links in chronological order:

  1. Bullfrog Tadpole Hunting
  2. Tadpole Progress Report
  3. We’ve Got a Frog With a Tail!
  4. A Frogs Peek

Now just as a little background info, our neighbors, who have a Better Homes and Gardens like yard, created 2 ponds.  One was created for fish, but it ended up to be quite the frog haven.  The kids had been invited to come visit the frogs whenever they want, and {A} takes full advantage of that invitation. : )  It’s a beautiful little pond, with a large frog statue on a bench, and frog stepping stones. It’s a Frog Paradise!

It even has a waterfall.  The sound of the trickling water is probably what beckoned the escaped frogs in that direction.

SO!….The day came in October when she decided it was time to let her last frog go. As I said, some had escaped her observatory months prior, and found their way to the neighbor’s pond.  So when it was time to let this last one go, {A} decided it would be the best new home for it. Complete with long lost family!

So first she brought the frog container out of the sanctuary.  This very home-made, make-shift pond, was just part of their home.  They had the entire sanctuary to hunt and hop around in. (There are lots of crickets, bugs and spiders!)

Then she had to find her (the frog) in the water, because she had hopped off her favorite rock she spent MANY HOURS on.  {A} assures us this one is a girl.

Here’s a really good look at one of the beauties {A} raised since she was just a little tadpole.

Like a Mama not wanting to forget the details of their babies, {A} gave her a good last look over.  And I photographed even the sweet little foot. Lord knows how big these flippers will grow to be someday!

Home Sweet Home!

{A} thinks they’ll winter well here because of all of the mud at the bottom, and she’ll see them all again in spring.  It was a very rewarding and educational experience to catch all of these amphibians back at the break of spring, feeding and caring for them, and recording their metamorphosis.  It’s also nice to have such a fancy new home to be able to release them to, so close by.

We hope you enjoyed {A}’s frog adventures and updates along the way. I’ve already heard she has big plans for this coming spring once again.  I know she misses her wild creatures throughout the winter months, but the winter season holds traditions, adventures and experiences of their own, that she enjoys so very much, and I am sure it’ll pass the time quickly enough until the earth springs anew with fresh life, and her little creatures wake up once again.

We’ve been very busy preparing hearth, home, and hearts for the Christmas season upon us!  Lots of decorating, creating and gift making going on here, of which we’ll share what we can. As tomorrow brings us the first day of December, visit us often to see what we’ve been up to, and feel free to comment to say hello or share your thoughts or experiences with us.

Tasha Tudor RoCkS!

December 1, 2008 By Laura Leave a Comment

Tasha Tudor is an author introduced to us through author Fiesta….back in, um, August.  Yes, we have dropped the Author Fiesta ball….or fallen off the Author Fiesta wagon <just insert your preferred phrase here>.  When busy season hits with our businesses, there is really only so much we can keep up with.

Tasha Tudor

But you know, sometimes, you can just zoom through some things, and you are so busy trying to keep up, that you aren’t left inspired! There’s no time to be inspired!!  What good is that?   But with Author Fiesta, Cay Gibson, who has put together the whole author study program, encourages all involved to go at our our speed anyway. So we kind of stalled at Tasha Tudor….or better said, we got stuck on her. In a very-good-way.  While we do hope to study the following 2 authors over our slower cold season, and envision ourselves doing so on the coldest of days, as we cuddle together with hot mugs of cocoa, being entertained by the stories formed in the imaginations (or partial experiences) of these child authors, we have all been greatly enriched, and inspired,  by the study of Tasha Tudor.

It’s not just her books, her stories and/or her illustrations.  It’s her LIFE.  It’s her SPIRIT.  It’s the soul that springs forth the works she gifts the world with. I think we have found those (capitalized) elements to be even MORE inspiring, than her works themselves.  She has literally left us somewhat….changed.

I think I can identify with Tasha so much, because like me, she is an artist.  An illustrator.  A visualizer.  Who, like me, I might add,  will stop at little to create the work she sees in her mind. (The contents of her freezer come to mind.)  It’s not that we want to create these visions in our mind.  It’s that we NEED to.  Without question or hesitation, we do whatever we have to make it a reality.  A physical state of the vision in our head.  But what I am also familiar with is the simple life of which she finds indescribable JOY in, the world of her own she creates, and the courage she effortlessly holds, to immerse herself into that world which she wishes to live in,  Yes, in doing so ultimately removing herself somewhat, from the world which she finds rather unenjoyable. Sad. Discouraging.  Not for her. It’s not a decision so much, as instinct. As following her heart. As being as dumbfounded that others live as they do, as they are that she lives as she does. People who know me, know I’m much like that.  Whether they like that about me or not, makes no difference to me! Or rather, to us as a family.  Because the satisfaction of living as you wish is bigger than anything else. Tasha knows this. It’s likely why she lived to be so old.

Tasha Tudor

I have not stopped thinking about her book, A Time To Keep.  Beautifully illustrated, beautifully written. And full of the kind of days and life I strive to give my children.  That they too may grow to treasure a heart full of childhood memories, however un-ordinary their experiences have been.  It only matters that they were abundant, and joyful! So that book alone inspired me.  Or at least made me feel in good company, sensing she too, found deep joy in the little things.

My children have fallen in love with Tasha for different reasons. It is merely the stories, the artwork, her animals (very much including Corgis, of course)and gardens.  It’s the world in which she lives in, or creates, more so than than why or how it all came to be. Or why she lives in such simplicity.  I think more than anything, they can relate to it. Either way….we have all been profoundly inspired by everything about her.  In a way, we feel blessed that we hadn’t gotten acquainted with her until after her passing.  For had we fallen in love with while she had lived, her death would have crushed us.

If you happen to be not familiar with Tasha Tudor, you might consider looking into what all of out fuss is about.  Another very enjoyable piece on her is this video, Take Joy!  The Magical World of Tasha Tudor.  My guess is that there is something in that documentary for everyone. At least things to ponder and wonder about. I was so excited when the library called and said my ‘hold was in’. I have wanted to watch this video about her for months. To ‘meet’ her, so to speak.  I asked my husband to sit and watch it with me that night, and he obliged, just a little disgruntled, and quite prepared with his work laptop on his lap, ready to save him from the probably boredom about to strike.  But guess what?  He didn’t touch key nor mouse-pad through the entire film! He had to chuckle when the credits rolled, that he got nothing done as he had planned. We chatted for at least a half an hour about her.  He was just as taken as I was, with this documentary of Tasha’s extraordinary life she rarely let anyone peek into. I was enchanted even by the way she spoke, and how she sort of laughed out the last few words of most every sentence she spoke-peppered with her own amusement.  I was excited for the kids to watch it too, the next day, because I suspected they would deeply enjoy it as well, and want to watch it again and again. (They have.)

This video, Take Joy, as well as A Time To Keep, and many of her books for children, are availale through your public library.

Tasha Tudor

Maybe you will relate to her and her life. Maybe not. I suppose it depends on what YOU treasure and hold dear to you. What inspires you. What your ideal world looks like to you. For us, in her own quiet and very private way, Tasha was a gift to the world, certainly through her works, and also the peek into her own world, which she eventually invited us all into.

Take Joy!!
