Getting Creative with Pumpkins

September 29, 2008 By Laura 3 Comments

unique-pumpkin-decorating_

On Sunday after mass, we went and picked up our pumpkins, having planned to paint some for our home decor.  It’s such a wonderful and inspiring time of year, and we were really looking forward to this project.

The kids worked together on this white pumpkin, below.  The polka dot theme was inspired by September’s issue of Better Home and Gardens.  The circles were embossed with an plunger-type apple corer.  While the directions instructed to insert the completely cored out pieces from other colored pumpkins into other colored pumpkin’s holes, (which is a great idea), we opted to just just partially carve a circle, and paint it in. We didn’t have enough different colored pumpkins to do the other way anyway. The kids all worked on this one together.

And it came out great!  So fun and whimsical!!

I was really excited about a design idea I saw in a magazine last year.  That particular project suggested using paper doilies as a template.  After going to 3-4 stores that were out of doilies completely, or didn’t carry them, I came up with Plan B….have my husband cut some designs out of vinyl, and use those as a template! : )  Seemed like a great idea, but applying a flat piece of sticky vinyl to a very round pumpkin, was a challenge and 1/2, to say the very least.

I had intended on painting it with some black acrylic I bought, until we tried some gouache markers we had.  They colored in like a dream…the coverage was unbelievably perfect, fast and easy.

I thought this big pumpkin was my own to work on, but soon had begging helpers who got to work with me too. It seemed you couldn’t really make a mistake, so I let them join in.  I was anxious to peel off the vinyl template anyway, so the more hands, the better.

But I got too excited, too soon. When we peeled off the template, it had really bled (a lot!) underneath the edges of the vinyl.  What a mess. While the designs look pretty dang nice in the end, I can’t tell you how much cleaning up I had to do on the first big pumpkin. (The one we are painting in above.)  I mostly used the edge of an x-acto blade, but also some wet q-tips and a pencil eraser for the light smudges left.  Talk about tedious work.  But it was worth it to me. : )

Just 2 pumpkins took so much longer than I had expected, so after the kids went to bed, my husband and I got to work on the other big one, with acrylic paint and a sponge brush this time.  It went pretty easy still, and came out much cleaner.  Some cleaning up to do still, but not nearly as much.   Then we did the little ones, and I was sad when I turned around and realized we did the last pumpkin!  I wanted to do more!!  I just LOVE them. and can’t decide exactly where to put the 6 we did around our home, because I want them everywhere, in every room!

Below are all of the ones we did. We may do more if we have time this month.  If not, this is a project worth doing again next year.

Today, the colors of Fall we have seen so far, continued to inspire everyone…..

We’ve only just begun to enjoy our harvest festivities!  We have so many places we want to go, plans and ideas for creating, crafting and baking, and can only hope we manage to get them all in!  We don’t want to miss a moment of the joy this season brings.

Thanks for dropping in.  Come by again soon.  : )

Autumn Decorating…Check!

September 25, 2008 By Laura Leave a Comment

cups-of-cocoa

Seasonal decorating around our home isn’t a chore, it’s an exciting event we make the most of! With Autumn being one of our very favorite seasons, we got right to it the day after it was officially Fall. And what’s decorating without cocoa?  We usually fill the air with festive music as well, as the kids take turns grabbing this and that, to find just the right spot for it.

The decorating is not completely done for this season.  I’ve got some pumpkin project plans for this weekend, and if we really get to it, I’ll be sure to take photos and share.

We’re also trying to get the homestead ready-enough around here, for a large television crew that will be blowing through our home next week and spending the day with us, as they film our family for a new show for Catholic TV.  Just a bit unnerving! But exciting, too. We will be the first family featured for this new program that features various Catholic families, how they live their life as a family, and how they pass down their faith!  Complete reality style tv (minus the drama, of course), with a tour of our ‘crib’, and interviews with some of us, one on one.  We are honored, and humbled, to have been approached to be the first family for this pilot show.  We are normally a fairly private family, but what an opportunity to share our valued faith, and the immense joy we find in Christ’s love — how He is the central and most vital part of our home, and our family.  We feel it’s obvious that God is really asking us to do this….and you just don’t say no to Him! Or we don’t dare, anyway!  So…..we are very, very excited, and a little bit nervous!  We’ll keep you posted with how taping day goes, and airing dates and times, if you’re interested.

Meanwhile…

Happy, Happy Fall, to you all!!

Paintin’ Seashells and Movin’ Dirt!

September 13, 2008 By Laura Leave a Comment

Yesterday was a typical September Friday, here on the farm.  Ok, we really don’t live on a farm, but I like to pretend we do. : )

After all of our school work was done, the kids really wanted to paint some of the oodles of seashells and treasures they collected on a long seashore excursion they had gone on the day before. We just love these September days…working in new school books, and spending many hours of our free time outdoors, exploring, imaging, learning and creating, (sometimes working) where the unbearable heat is now just a memory, and we can sense those beautiful Autumn days coming down the road.

The deck table seemed like the best place for the kids to get to work painting their seashells.  The long and cold winter days are closer than we like to think too, and we’ll have plenty of projects to do gathered around our family table indoors, when those days are here!  So for now, we prefer to take advantage of nice weather, drawing in deep breathes of the fresh clean air, with every stroke of the brush.

They get so immersed in their work, their little serious expressions always catch my attention.  And it’s QUIET!

After a half day of work, Daddy got to a home project of his own ‘up in the mountains’, as our kids call them.  What they really are, are huge mounds of dirt, as the aftermath left from our home construction.  As the excavator dug out the earth for more house, it got dumped right up there….in where we used to call ‘up in the woods’. (Not very deep woods, mind you. lol).  The dirt piles, right outside of our school windows which we spend some of our school time peering and glancing out of, have nonetheless served us much enjoyment.  With our bird feeders out there, we have watched so many species of birds come and go, studying their habits and markings, not to mention the critters of the furrier kind, and their antics.  But our goal is to turn the ‘mountains’ into an upper yard, with part of it also serving as a more charming bird sanctuary.

So, Michael had begun moving a little dirt on another day, but not really having a firm plan of exactly what or how he wanted to do it.  Meanwhile, the kids had been begging to go up and help.  So yesterday, the whole idea of what needed to be done gelled in his head, and he got to work.  This time when the all of kids asked to help, he said ‘sure!’.  Of course, he didn’t expect them to really be much help, or last very long.  After all, it’s hard work, lifting and throwing shovel-fulls of dirt!  Especially if you’re 6 years old,  and less than 4 feet tall!

Here’s the big pic of what is being worked on.  I believe Michael will build one more retainer wall at the top. It’s all going to be LOVELY when we finish bringing to reality the visions in our head. We love projects like this!

bigpic

They worked really hard, and as time passed, collectively, were really ‘moving mountains’!!  Goes to show you what a little team work can do!!  What’s better, is that this is their idea of FUN!!!  I admit…I was in the house working, because I had to.  But I couldn’t help sneaking out quite regularly, just to watch their persistence, and to take photos of course.

all

While they all worked very hard, we need to give props to our little girl. While the other kids took breaks, alternating digging with playing, running and climbing elsewhere, {O} kept on working.  She was ‘loving it’, as they say.  With the exception of a lunch break, this little half-pint dug in and threw dirt for 4 hours straight!

And was still smiling…….

After clean-up and dinner prepping, we had a nice meal of fresh vegetable stir fry pockets, with cheese of course. But the kids did not let me forget that it was ‘Friday night’!!  They have had these new big new glow sticks that friends of ours gave them, and they have been wanting to play with them at night. But really, having time to play would require them staying up late.  So I had told them they had to wait until Friday night.  Thankfully, once I gave that answer, they didn’t ask again.  They just counted down the days and discussed their excitement amongst themselves.  So the night had finally come, an when I told them they had to pick up their toys, and be in pajamas and all washed up first, the agenda got done faster than usual.  ; )

And so they played, and like with everything they do, their faith was not forgotten……

Shane’s ‘Jesus Fish’….

3 little angels, …..pretending, we think. lol

Soon it was really time for bed. They put up less resistance than usual, and as they lied in bed, they didn’t sing as many songs together as they usually do, as they drift off to sleep.  I guess they were pretty tired, and there is no wonder why!!  After all….they moved mountains that day.

Custom Framed Refrigerator Chalkboard – DIY

August 30, 2008 By Laura 3 Comments

refrigerator chalkboard

We are SO very blessed, that the man and head of our household and family (well, one of them, lol) is so multi-talented.  There is NOTHING he cannot do.  He is what they refer to as a ‘Jack-of-all-trades‘.  Except his name is Michael. His vast abilities including mechanics, electronics, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, landscaping, finishing, you name it….has probably saved us ga-zillions over the years.  His father is the same way, and that’s exactly where he got it from. They are natural born do-it-yourselfers-, and they do so with pride and quality in their work.

So I knew my new little dream could quite possibly come true, when I told my ever-loving husband I REALLY wanted a big chalkboard, custom built to fit our fridge. : ) I just knew he could make a beauty, and I knew he loved me that much. : )  I adore chalkboards (though personally, chalk-dust on my hands gives me such willies). Seeing a big blank black slate gives me butterflies, at just the thought of the endless possibilities of learning and creating that can be done on one.  I KNEW the kids would LOVE it.  I could see it in my head, and really, it was a beautiful sight, there on our fridge.  I just wanted my vision to become REAL.

And so my husband made yet another one of my little dreams come true, and the kids have loved it and enjoyed it every day, and every bit as much as I knew they would.  And, wouldn’t you know,  so has my husband, who has had some ‘play time’ of his own on it!  He is truly a kid-at-heart, cracking us up with his antics on a daily basis.

Here’s his latest fine craftsmanship, displayed as all of the shots I was just having too much fun taking.

What do you think?  I’m thrilled with it!

We’ve got more excitement going on in the next several days than we can handle!  Our 3 babies turn 6! So we’ve got great plans to celebrate their lives.  Then, a few days later, we officially start a new school year! It’ll be our 4th year home schooling, and what a wonderful year we have planned ahead!

Thanks for visiting today!

Boot Wall Garden

August 30, 2008 By Laura Leave a Comment

On our way back from seeing the Dewey-Granby Oak Tree, as we drove along the windy country road, I spotted a very interesting and creative site in someone’s yard:  a rock wall, lined with old boots, filled with plants and flowers. As we kept on going, and I kept exclaiming how cool that was, my husband finally offered, ‘Do you want me to turn around and go back?”  To which I replied “Yes, I do!!”.

Now, the actual site in person is fairly drab looking.  After all, rocks are not all that colorful, and neither are old boots that have been sitting in all kinds of weather elements, for probably years.  But I knew I could work the image into something.  And anyway, it was the creative concept of the wall, and the country feel I was so drawn to. I really just wanted to take that whole rock wall, boots and all, with me, so I had to and at least photograph it!  So at the risk of being in that position once again, of someone coming out and yelling at me “Get off my property!!“.  Or at least some questions regarding my motives of photographing their property. (People who know and love me, know there isn’t much I wouldn’t do to get a shot I want.  So for one thing, I’ve trespassed more than I care to admit. lol.)  But all that did happen was some cute kids came to the screen door on the old house.  I hoped a parent would come out, so I could offer to send them whatever it was I came up with, with the photo….because I just knew I’d turn it into art somehow. And I tried.  I’ll be printing this as a 10×20 piece for my wall, so I can put it in my house somewhere and look at it every day, and enjoy.
