The Greatest Show on Earth! – The Circus From a Private Suite

October 13, 2008 By Laura Leave a Comment

cute-ticket-holders

Sometime this past Friday, my husband heard that the Barnum and Bailey Circus was in the Big Town: Boston! Not too far from us.  It reminded us that when our triplets {J, O and S} were born, Barnum and Bailey sent them 3 free passes, good for life. Lots of companies sent us great stuff, because they were triplets, I guess. So upon realizing half of us could get in for free, we really got excited and started making plans for Sunday after Mass, to take the kids and surprise them.

Once we found out the show times that day, and it was a firm plan, something else occurred to us that made our hearts drop, and put a little damper on our excitement:   We thought about how there was probably going to be peanut debris everywhere at the center, where the circus would be held.  That’s a PROBLEM, in all caps, because {S} is severely allergic to any exposure to peanut products.  He is at complete risk for anaphylactic shock, and it’s a threat t his life.

So Michael (my husband) decided to just call the center, and see if it was indeed a concern; Were there peanuts and peanut shells everywhere?  He spoke to a really nice woman, and she basically said “Oh yes…there is peanut shells and such everywhere. They feed them to the elephants, and the vendors sell roasted peanuts at the snack bars too.”.  <sigh>  So he then asked if they possibly had any section of seats somewhere, that was a peanut-free zone.  He figured that was possible, as common as peanut allergies are these days.  The woman he was speaking with was all about figuring something out.  She was calling Guest Services to see what they could come up with.  She said to call that day if we decided to go, and they would do everything they could to accommodate us. She wasn’t sure WHAT yet, but she said she’d work on it.

So without a firm plan, I was a nervous wreck, as mothers get. I wanted to be excited about bringing the kids to the circus, but, I was so worried. So I had a plan, too!  I didn’t even want the kids to know where we were going, even as we drove there, because if there wasn’t a safe enough spot, we were turning around and coming home. My boy’s life just wasn’t worth the risk.  If there WAS a fairly peanut-safe area, I had all the other precautions I could think of:  His Epi-Pens of course (he is never, ever, anywhere, without them),  sanitizing hand wipes, and a dark blue sheet to throw over the seats where he would sit.  And then, we stopped at the ER on the way and I got some of those paper masks. : )  He was wearing one if there was a question of contamination.

So when we got there and parked, Michael called the lady back on his cell, and told her we were there. (He was carrying {S}, and I was still a wreck without knowing the exact safety-plan. )  The woman told him “Oh yes, we’ve been waiting for you.  Just buy 3 of the most inexpensive tickets, and come on upstairs to the Guest Services Office.”

O.k.  That was comforting to know they remembered, and were expecting us. So, we did, and then we were cheerfully escorted to a suite of our own!! They told us it had been specially cleaned and completely sanitized just for us, and to just enjoy the show! Seriously?!  They left us in this beautiful room, completely furnished. It was beyond what we were ever expecting, with a private bathroom (that’s always cool with kids), 4 or 5 flat-screen tvs, a computer, sink, fridge, bar with stool and huge slider glass doors that opened with a view of the whole arena from the room!  We even had our own balcony with 2 rows of seats. As cool as the room was (and really, we didn’t need all of THAT), I was just so-very-relieved over the safety of which {S} could enjoy the circus, along with all of us, that I was near tears. I was just seriously overwhelmed with gratitude. A few minutes later, there was a knock at the door, and 2 EMTs came in and introduced themselves, and let us know they were right down the hall if we needed anything.  I was sure by then that we wouldn’t be needing them, but talk about nice!

Beyond the safety of this room, it was cool to just be able to get up and move around during the 2 hour show. (That’s a good thing for ME. lol).  We just thoroughly enjoyed the show, and this special family time, and felt so blessed that this woman cared enough to make arrangements like that for us.  She surely represents the ‘good people’ in this world, who work with a smile, and want to help people when they can.  We’ll never forget it, and we know the kids will always remember this surprise trip to the circus, that we watched from the special room.  What an incredible experience to have.

So enough of our cool story.  Here’s some photos…some better than others. lol.  I was shooting in the dark with flash most of the time.

This gives you a good idea of how we were able to view the show from this room.

Below was one of the kids favorite acts, on this contraption, featuring “Bello”, the clown star of the show.   It was pretty funny, but made your heart race too.

stunt-contraption-in-circus

It really was a phenomenal show.  Even the intermission was fun, actually.  The kids were wiped out on the way home.  {J} fell asleep in the van immediately, {O} caught some zzz’s too, once I saw she was fighting off dozing, and I told her to go ahead and close her eyes.  {S} was a little too pumped to sleep then, but talked about how he looked forward to going to bed. lol.  {A} stayed wide awake, and was mesmerized by the full moon over the city horizon line. She noticed it had an orange ring around it, and it fascinated her.

Once we got home and everyone woke back up, the circus talk was non-stop….about their favorite parts, and re-playing all of the acts that they thought were so funny. They had a late dinner, and went to bed soon after – dreaming about the circus no doubt.

Today, the circus chatter continued.  I guess that’s why it’s called The Greatest Show on Earth!

On Turning 40 and Family Apple Picking

October 9, 2008 By Laura 1 Comment

1_40-pancakes

I can hardly believe it myself.  Last Friday was my birthday, and I turned 40 years old!!  Yes, I’m the oldest and wisest of my family.
(Ok, I added the wisest bit myself. lol)

I’ve waited since I was really a kid, to feel grown up. But I still feel like a kid!  Since I have all of the responsibilities an adult would have, I’m guessing I am one by now, and I’ll just never feel it. I must have had some notion when I was a kid, about what it must ‘feel like‘ to be all grown up, and I’ve waited for ‘that’ feeling.  And I was just plain wrong. Because I’m still waiting!  Not complaining.  Just saying. : )

I didn’t plan my birthday-day, this year, as is the tradition around here.  Or certainly not in advance, as I was supposed and expected to do, anyway.  With the planning for the tv crew being at our house, last Wednesday, and Thursday spent doing our school work and catching up on work, Friday was there before I knew it!  Birthday morning brought 5 excited faces, all with a set of ears of their own, just waiting to hear my big plans of the day for our family, to celebrate my birthday.  (Oh dear. “Think quick“,  I told myself.)

Well, I knew I just wanted to do something Autumn-themed, with my family.  I decided on just what we did last year for my birthday;   a nice ride to enjoy the fall foliage and decorated yards along the way, some apple picking, having fun taking photos as I please, and maybe a stop or 2 at some antique shops.

So after the traditional birthday breakfast, we headed out to our local(ish)  pick-your-own-this-and-that farm, CN Smith’s. It was a really enjoyable and peaceful ride along the winding roads, with many trees in the early stages of a changing color palette.  But it did seem the clouds were starting to roll in, and it was the kind that seemed to blow a gentle breeze that whispered ‘rain ‘.

I love the store of this farm.  It is always selling their fresh fruit and produce of the season, grown right there in their own fields. They also have native honey, preserves, and apple cider.  There’s a petting zoo outside, lots of flowers, some green houses, a great old tractor, and you can go pick-your-own-whatever through many of the seasons of the year.  I might add, they really get into Halloween.  A little too much for our crew, (and frankly, even for me!),  although the carved pumpkin hay rides are nothing short of amazing.

Just as we headed out to the apple orchards, it began to sprinkle rain. I didn’t mind US getting a little wet, but I was worried about my camera.  After all…it’s my big $-maker.  And my other best friend. : )  But I decided to have a little birthday faith in the Lord, and He indeed made my little ‘don’t let it rain‘ wish come true. He’s so good to me. : )

And so the picking began.  As did the photo-taking .  I had some much fun with my family, and my camera.

Then, with our bag of red gems in hand, it was time to head in the direction of home, anyway, with perhaps a stop or 2 along the way.

On our own birthdays, we decide what kind of birthday cake we want.  My choice?

Apple Crisp, with vanilla ice cream please!  (ok, so it’s not cake, but it’s close enough.)

My husband and oldest daughter got to peeling right away when we got home, and baked a delicious dish of just-what-I-wanted, with a great big golden scoop to go with it.

A fine Autumn day, full of beautiful colors and fresh air,  a long country ride, as I listen to the amusing conversations of my children in the back, laughter and adventure, fun photo opportunities, good food I didn’t have to make, home made cards expressing such love, tons of hugs, kisses, cuddles, the counting of blessings that are mine all year long….all spent with my family.  That is what my kind of birthdays are made of.

Happy Birthday to me, indeed.

The Filming of Our Pilot Episode ‘House+Home’ for CatholicTV / A Behind the Scenes Look

October 3, 2008 By Laura 3 Comments

October 2008 – This past Wednesday was the filming day of our family at our home for the pilot episode of ‘House+Home‘, for CatholicTV.  We did it! And what a day it was! In this post we are sharing all of the chaos and behind the scenes happenings of filming day at our house.

To fill you in on the premise of the show, the series of House+Home takes viewers to Catholic family homes. In each episode Fr. Reed visits the family, and learns how they use faith, hope and love to turn their house into a home, and how they as a family, live out their Catholic faith in their daily lives.

Nerves (Big-Time) & Our Incentive

The night before, it started to hit us, what we were about to do.  As Michael and I plopped into bed about midnight, the night before, Michael whispered into the dark, “We’re crazy.”….and we both busted out laughing hysterically.

In the first place, we were a bit self conscious about the state of our home, and having it all filmed for tv, as we were still in the process of working very hard on the house and yard after a major renovation. Our home and yard projects were far from done, with much still left undone, and not particularly looking very nice! Not to mention, we were also just personally nervous and somewhat uncomfortable at the idea of being in front of TV cameras. However, we believed in the premise of the show, and hoped our going first would encourage many other families to follow in our footsteps and also share this beautiful faith, and how they too uniquely live it out daily in their own lives. We certainly had personal stories and testaments of our faith to share, and knowing too that it is the love, of Christ and family, that makes a house a home, (and not the projects completed or not) we felt called by God to respond with a ‘yes‘, after Fr. Reed asked our family to be filmed for this pilot episode.

It was also one of those experiences that don’t come along every day (certainly never in our days).  What a wonderful and educational experience for the kids, to not only see television production, but be a part of it, and to realize all of the hard work that goes into making a tv show.

Fr. Robert Reed (president of CatholicTV, and host of the show) had filled us in very well in the prior weeks, of exactly what to expect throughout this filming day. There were no surprises. (Well, maybe a few little ones. lol) Somehow, though, when the crew started arriving, setting up all of the equipment, and having little crew huddles talking about their plan and work to be done, we felt the nerves start to set in!  But it wasn’t long before we were filming segments, and there was no time to even think about nerves, because we were so focused on what we were saying and doing.

Sharing/Showing What We Can

Of course I took any behind-the-scenes photos I could get in.  There aren’t many though, because I was on camera myself most of the time!  But here are some behind the scene snapshots I managed to take, to share, and record this day for the kids. I won’t bother telling you about the entire day, because honestly, there’s a lot and I’m not sure I could remember it all. It was many hours of footage. But here’s a preview, and I guess you’ll just have to watch the episode to get the rest!

“Ready, aaaand . . . .ROLL!!!”

The filming started with our guest, and host (and creator, I believe) of the show, Fr. Reed arriving:

frarrival

We welcomed him to our home, chatted a bit in the sun room, and then we gave him a tour of the house and our studio/work areas.

Interviews

After wards, we all had interviews with Fr. Reed. {A}’s (our oldest daughter) was first, outdoors in our work-in-progress-yard, ‘up in the mountains’, near the huge pile of tree brush and stumps, which is only still there because it is where some of A’s chipmunks live.  (She has hand-tamed a large number of chipmunks.  See for yourself HERE.) We were all hoping they would come out for {A}, as they always do, but with the crew all around, it wasn’t happening. They were too shy and scared.  Earlier though, one of the crew guys did happen to see out the slider door,  one of the chipmunks come up on the deck and around our door, waiting for {A} to come out and feed him, though.  Anyway, we couldn’t hear {A}’s interview down in the yard, but I did get this shot of them up there filming it.  Her interview will be a bit of a surprise for us all.

alexis-grace-interview .

After that was what they called ‘the triplet interview’, which I had no idea they planned on doing. (Surprise #1)  { J, O and S}, did really well.  We couldn’t actually hear all of that either, but it looked like it was going really well.  We’re anxious to hear what they said. (And can only imagine!) Bet it’s going to be cute!

triplets-interview-on-house-+-home

triplets-interview-on-house-+-home-2

Us parents had a couple’s interview, as well, also by Fr. Reed, of course. Ours was in the house, and the hardest part for us.  We had the big light on us, and it was like a real tv studio interview, with crew guys and equipment all around.  But Fr. Reed asked great questions about our faith, how it encourages and sustains us in our lives for us personally, and more. We think it went pretty well. Of course, we started thinking about what we forgot to say, or wish we didn’t say, lol…but no one knows those things.  For just regular people here, I think we did pretty well.  Ok, I did choke up once, because some questions were linked to emotionally deep stuff for us, but, I got it together. ; )  No photos of us being interviewed, of course, but they filmed it all.  It will be edited down, of course.

Cameramen were just all over the place, all of the time.  It’s true that you do start getting a little used to it, pretty quickly. Here’s just one of the guys in our unfinished stairwell to the upstairs.

filming-house-+-Home .

Sharing a Meal Together

We invited Fr. Reed to stay for dinner, as is part of the show (although we were happy to anyway), and made our family recipe/tradition of pizza together in the kitchen.  He helped make the dough. : )  When the pizzas came out of the oven, we gathered around the table, and had grace and dinner together, but of course we fed the crew, too! Here (below) they are, minus the photographer (for the CatholicTV Magazine), who left a little early before filming was done. (We wrapped up some pizza to go for him.)   Can I just say the whole crew is the NICEST bunch of guys, and were so great to work with! Just great guys. The guy on the left was the producer.  It was kind of funny to see the them squirm a little, though, when they found themselves in front of MY camera.  I guess THEY prefer to be behind the camera, too! Imagine that! But they kindly obliged. (Thanks guys!!)

Blog Fan in the House!

After dinner, Fr. Reed took the kids to the computer, because apparently he’s a new fan of our blog! (Surprise #2).  They talked with him about their photos on it, and some of their adventures and activities, and then they went to CatholicTV.com.  The kids are very familiar with CatholicTV, and all of the shows Fr. Reed is on.  So they got a kick out of watching it on the computer, with him on it, and yet him also sitting in the computer chair next to them, watching it with them. lol

Our Visit and Filming Ends

We filmed the good-by and end of our visit, with us waving, and Fr. Reed driving off.
But then Fr. Reed came back, off-camera. lol

After filming was done, and the crew was packed up and gone, Fr. Reed gave {A} a little Latin lesson, which he has done virtually every Sunday after Mass at church, for quite awhile.  It is he, who inspired {A} to take Latin as a subject this school year (at home), which she is doing very well in.  She loves it.  So here they are, as he gives her another one of his little lessons.

Fr-Reed-Alexis-Grace

Fr-Reed-Alexis-Grace-2
Exhausted, Wired & Grateful

When Fr. Reed left for real, we were wiped out!! We were relieved we got through it, and it seemed to go so well. (I guess we’ll all see soon enough!)
We really enjoyed the whole process, though. It was just an amazing day we will always remember. Surreal, really.  As long and tiring of a day that it was, we are so glad we did it. The kids did so well, all day, and we’re really proud of them.  It was a big day for them. We certainly have a new and even greater respect for television production, and all Fr. Reed does at CatholicTV, every day!

Somehow though, the whole day’s experience really gave us a heightened sense of the real family that we are, and how very blessed we are. It also seemed to call for a family photo, via the timer in my camera.  : ) After the photo, as tired as were were, we were also wired and had some funny energy to get out.  So we all changed into jeans and sneakers, and went to the park (actually, we went to 2!) to run, climb, and even play hopscotch.

The next morning, after devotion, and before a regular schooling day, we asked the kids “What was your very favorite part of the taping day?”.  They all just smiled big as they thought and thought, and it was so quiet for a moment. And then {A} said “I don’t know…I mean, the whole day was just totally fun!!”….to which {J, O and S} replied…”Yeah!  The whole day was TOTALLY FUN!!“.   Indeed it was.

We’ll keep you posted when we know an air date for the show, and when the series begins.  Today was another special day, of which we’ll blog about next. Meanwhile, thanks so much, for checking in, and sharing in our experience with us.

Whale Carcass Washes Ashore – A Spontaneous Field Trip

September 23, 2008 By Laura 1 Comment

This morning, after having had an extended weekend away, we were planning a regular school day today, with getting some our book lessons done.  That is, until we woke up to helicopters, circling around and around, near our house.  So my husband turned on the tv to find out what might be going on, and low and behold, there was a whale carcass washed ashore on our beach nearby. Time for a spontaneous field trip!  THIS is the beauty of homeschooling!

So the kids ate breakfast, washed up and got dressed as fast as they could, and we all headed out in search of the whale. After a driving down a few side-roads that had public access ways, and checking the shore there, we finally found the spot.  Except the only way down was very steep, very sandy and rocky cliff.  But if you know us…..we went for it.   We all made it down safely, as I wondered out loud, repeatedly, how we’d ever make it back up!  But we’d figure that out later I guess.  We had a dead whale to study. : )

whale-carcass-washed-ashore_1

Though it didn’t seem to be a full grown adult, it was rather impressive, nonetheless. (And seemed huge to our little kids.) It was so interesting to see all of it’s parts, up close and in person.  as a whole, it was not pretty by any means!! Not anymore, anyway. Part of it was really decomposing, as it seemed to have been dead awhile, and just finally got washed ashore.

This side (photo below), was the worst. It was barely recognizable as a whale at all. And in standing on the other side, where the breeze came on off-water, the smell was intolerable. UGH! But it was this side that you could see the bones of the jaw, on the far right, as well as the eye socket.  So it was fascinating, visually.

The kids enjoyed walking around it, checking it out, asking questions and stepping on it’s tail. LOL. Naturally, I was taking photos, and thinking about blogging with such yucky, yet interesting photos, about our unexpected experience.  Below at this angle you can see the upper jaw bones even better,  on the far left this time.

whale-carcass-washed-ashore_2

As we were looking at it, yet another couple of helicopters were flying around over head.  Other people began to arrive too, and some guessed we were homeschoolers.

whale-carcass-washed-ashore_3

Once we had our fill of fascination and disgust, we decided to figure out which one of the many sets of beach access stairs, that climbed the cliff-side, were public.  As we made our way down the beach, we came across a scattered intestines of the whale, here and there, that had washed up separately. (Yuck.) Once up the cliff and on our way up the road, back to our van, we saw the environmental police showing up.  Marine biologists had already been there, in the earlier morning hours.

When we got home, we did some research and determined that it was a humpback whale.  Later TV news reports throughout the day confirmed that.  It’s not yet determined if this whale died of natural causes, or by accident due to being bumped by a ship, or caught up in fishing nets.  It seems they plan to retrieve the the skeleton of the whale for museum display, and either bury the flesh, or drag it back out to sea.

It was yet another homeschooling adventure our kids were able to witness! They talked about it the rest of the day, and the little ones colored pictures of whales and other sea creatures, and recreated the scene with imaginary play.  After we got all of our book lessons done of course.

Weekend in NH

September 23, 2008 By Laura Leave a Comment

dragonfly

This past weekend we headed up to NH for a few days, to have a visit with the kids paternal grandparents.  They have a park model at a lake resort, in a beautiful wooded area.

The kids had a lot of fun just hanging around at the camp during the day, taking walks, feeding the fish at the stocked pond nearby (no fishing allowed), and just enjoying the great outdoors.  We had campfires every night, which are always special to us, and the kids fell deep asleep at night, (after fighting the sleep too long), in their cozy sleeping bags their grandparents surprised them with for their birthday, when we arrived.

The food is always good when Grandma is in the kitchen, so we all enjoyed the meals!  But probably the highlight of the weekend was when Grandma and Grandpa took us to a trout hatchery fairly near-by, for the kids to do some fishing in the stocked pond there.  It was loaded with rainbow trout, and you could see every one in the clear water.  Seriously, the kids would no sooner cast, and they would get a hit, and would see the fish bite their bait. lol.   It was mostly the smaller, more ignorant trout that bit, but pretty good sized no less. The catch was (no pun intended), you had to keep what you caught.  No catch-and-release there.  The kids were catching them one after another, with {O} bringing in the most. Then we found out the cost per trout was $5!  Good thing it was Grandma and Grandpa’s treat!! We are guessing that any patience the kids had developed about waiting for fish to bite, in the course of their many, many fishing trips since early spring, are likely undone after this experience!

So, in the end the kids caught their own dinner that day!!  Some of the fish were given to some other family we had a nice visit with when we got back to camp.  But the rest was cleaned, coated and fried over an outdoor grill, and eaten for dinner.  The little kids really liked it!

The whole fishing experience was quite educational with the little kids though.  One of them, who is known to have ordered baked scrod in restaurants more than once, was a little bit bothered by seeing what was being done to ‘God’s creations’, having seen for the first time the process how fish become food, for us.  This prompted a great discussion, or two, about the Biblical fact that God put the animals on earth to help sustain mankind, and to help balance all of the rest of his creation, in some amazing cycles of life.

It was a great family weekend together, for all of us. With the kids grandparents living quite far away year round, they don’t see them often enough.  The memories that were created for the kids this weekend, having spent such extended quality time with their grandparents these few days, we know will always be remembered by them.  The events will be brought up between them in those “Remember when…?” stories for many years to come. And no doubt told to their own children.

Bet you’re wondering where all of the photos are, huh??  Believe it or not, all I took was several shots of the dragonfly above, that just kept returning next to my side, out on the dock at the lake.  So that’s about all I have to share.

Thanks for dropping by!
