The Last Birthday HOORAH for the Triplets 7th! – Mini-Golfing and Milkshakes

September 27, 2009 By Laura 7 Comments

The one thing the triplets {J, O & S} did ask to do for their birthday, was go to the ‘Awful-Awful Milkshake place’, (that’s ‘awfully thick and awfully good) and mini-golfing, next door to that.  It’s down on the Cape, where we love to go in the warmer seasons anyway.

So that’s what we did.

triplets and their big sister

One of our favorite parts of this course, is the rock cave.

d4

I always wonder if we’ll run into the Flintstone Family when we pass through. lol  More than that, I fear Dino is going to come out of nowhere,  jump on me, knock me down, and lick my face, like he does to Fred. I wouldn’t like that at all.  Trust me.

There’s also a simulated  plane crash, : (,  and a waterfall.  There’s no bodies to be seen, so we happily assume everyone walked away, without a scratch.  That works for us.

g4

Some nice man offered to take our photo together, as a family. I am NEVER in the photos, as you know.  So I immediately agreed.  I had my big SLR with me (I just can’t deal with point & shoots yet), and he chuckled at me a little when he took the camera, and I put the strap around his neck. ; )  In other words, ‘You seem to me be an awfully nice man. But that doesn’t mean that I trust you not to drop this.’.  I think he understood what I wasn’t saying. I set the camera (in his hands) for him, and took my place.

Of course, he didn’t realize I had the camera set to take multiple exposures, if you hold the shutter down, and I didn’t think to tell him.  So….he kept holding down the shudder (being used to a point and shoot, probably), and so we got 5 or 6 photos that look exactly like this one. lol

When we finished our game, we returned our clubs and ordered our milkshakes.

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US CHEERS!!”

7-year-old-triplets-2

A BIG BIRTHDAY HUG.

Now, if I was going to boast, I’d probably tell you how I got 4 (FOUR!) hole-in-ones, while playing this game with my family. But, you know, bragging has just never been my style.  I’m a humble girl.  ; )

That should wrap up our birthday celebrations for these three!  Can’t believe it took so long.  It’s Autumn now! (And almost time for mine!)  Hope you enjoyed the posts!

A Surprise Birthday Trip for the Triplets – John Carver Inn

September 13, 2009 By Laura 4 Comments

We are continuing to share with you here, our little celebrations we had for {J, O & S}’s 7th birthday.  Michael and I had been planning for a month, this surprise overnight trip for the kids.  It was interesting for me to try and secretly pack for us all! Especially for {A}, who I know would much prefer to do it herself!  She likes to bring as much of what she owns as she can, and there are a lot of ‘musts’ as well.  But I wanted to pack LIGHT.  I thought, if anyone would realize we were going somewhere overnight, it would be her, and I would know that she knew, when I saw something she had, that I didn’t pack!

So after lunch, cake choices, and their surprise of MP3 players, we headed out on our trip. Michael managed to get the suitcase in the van without anyone noticing.  Unknown to them, we were only heading across our own town of Plymouth, MA, to the John Carver Inn.  This is a great hotel/inn in downtown Plymouth, that many of our guests who come into town to visit us, stay at. Especially those with kids. Because one of the greatest perks of the John Carver Inn is their  Mayflower-themed pool and awesome slide . . . . . .

John Carver Inn Plymouth MA There’s a huge ship, with a really great water-tube slide!!

John Carver Inn Plymouth MA These stairs climb up to the ship, and the entry to the slide.

John Carver Inn Plymouth MA

I knew they would love it, after swimming every day for weeks this past summer, and loving every water-filled-minute of it.

It was the biggest hit with {S}, who loves anything that goes FAST! I already worry about his driving years.

John Carver Inn Plymouth MA

I always crack up, looking at him when his face is all wet, the way those crazy-long wet eyelashes of his, just stick to his eyelids all over the place. John Carver Inn Plymouth MA

He went down that slide again, and again, and again. I had this ridiculous need to take a photo of him coming out, every time.

John Carver Inn Plymouth MA

{A} was swimming all over that pool.  I was looking for her half the time, and she was often in the deeper end,  on the other side of the ‘Plymouth Rock’ that holds the hot tub.  I forgot to take photos of that.

John Carver Inn Plymouth MA

But she loved the slide too.  She always holds her nose still,  going under water.  My sister always did that.

John Carver Inn Plymouth MA

{J} was the first one down that big slide, within a few minutes of getting there that afternoon, when I didn’t have my camera with me yet.  : /  He liked it, but he preferred to do other water-related things, so I never got a photo of him going down.

John Carver Inn Plymouth MA

{O} has always been our water-bug, since birth.  Very tactile.

John Carver Inn Plymouth MA

But she preferred to practice her hand-stands over going down the slide.

John Carver Inn Plymouth MA

And also having piggy-back rides with Daddy through the waterfall > another great feature at this pool!

They all wanted rides through the waterfall……

John Carver Inn Plymouth MA

LOL!

John Carver Inn Plymouth MA

John Carver Inn Plymouth MA

When {A} was little, she used to be really big on piggy back rides.  Now, she’s just really big! Those long legs are ridiculous.

John Carver Inn Plymouth MA

There are lots of perks of always being the one behind the camera. And one of them, are the days you are wearing a bathing suit. ; )   I was there.  I swam. I went through the waterfall. I had lots of fun. But I did not go down the slide. Or have my photo taken. : )  I know; I should have. I need to, a lot more. It really is important, and I realize all of the reasons why.

Anyway, we made great memories at the John Carver Inn, and we had a wonderful dinner that night, at the Hearth ‘n Kettle Restaurant, which is downstairs in the hotel. The kids love that place. So cozy, with a little old-time feel to it. The food is great, too.  The kids ate every bit of their meals (as always-they love to eat!), and really, really loved the sweet-potato fries!

We did more swimming the next morning before checking out. But that one night as we all crawled into our 2 Queen beds in our hotel room, with girls all in one bed, and boys in the other, I noticed {A} snuggling up to that nightie she sleeps with every night. Mine. The one she confiscated.  The one I nursed her in, many, many summer nights in the first year of her life. The one she still has me wear again just once, after she has it washed, so it smells like me again.

The one…I didn’t pack!

The Triplets’ Birthday Cake Choices

September 8, 2009 By Laura 3 Comments

After 7 years, it finally happened! The triplets wanted different kinds of birthday cake.

As I’ve mentioned before, we all choose what we want for our birthday cakes in our family.  Up until this year, we’ve really lucked out in that, {J, O & S} have always just agreed on the same kind of cake.  So this year was a ‘first’.  They had all spent their own bouts of time flipping through their big sister’s cook books, and it seems 2 of them had seen something they wanted, and they knew exactly on which page, in which book, it was.

So this post isn’t directional recipes, per say, but a few cute ideas you may like to use for your kids, or yourself, sometime!  Good news: Birthdays are not a requirement!  An ordinary Sunday, the kickoff of a school vacation, or house cleaning being all done, are all good enough reasons for a treat!  Feel free to come up with your own reasons.  It’s really not hard to do when you’re in the mood for a treat!

triplets' birthday cakes

Look how happy they are! This makes the extra hours in the kitchen, worth it.

tripets' birthday cake

{J} chose to have a ‘Mice Cream’.

In a graham cracker mini-pie crust, add a big scoop of your favorite ice cream.  (In other words, choose your mouse color. : )

Eyes & Nose =  Chocolate Chips

Whiskers = Large sprinkles

Ears = Keebler Grasshopper Cookies

Tail = We wanted red licorice string rope. But we could not find any. So, we picked up some of this Extreme Sweetly-Sour Belts, that we cut for a thin tail.  It was wicked gross, and we threw it out as soon as the tail served it’s purpose. : )

Cute, huh?

{O} chose a Cupcake Cone

With some yellow cake batter from {S}’s, we filled the cone up more than 2/3 full, and baked in 350 degree oven for 25-28 minutes. Cool, frost, sprinkle, eat. : )  We made 7.

~~~
{S} wanted a 7 Cake!
Oh yeah, he’s sharin’!
We just baked an ordinary marble cake in a square cake pan, and cool.  Remove from the pan, cut into a 7, frost and sprinkle.
We used to rarely have sweets around here.  But since {A} loves baking so much, and with so many birthdays, holidays and blessings, we’re finding more reasons to celebrate with a treat than we used to!  Thankfully, they are generously spaced with many healthy balanced diet meals around the table together.
Music to the Triplets’ Ears – Birthday Surprises
September 8, 2009 By Laura 4 Comments
There are things our kids / triplets can always count on for their birthday:  birthday number pancakes, a whole day or few together, just spent having major family quality time, cake of their choice, lots of love and stories about their birth, and the flying of time.
But they don’t often ask for anything, or expect gifts that we can tell.  While we’ve always told them you should never EXPECT gifts from anyone, we’ve always given them something for their birthday!  So if they are expecting anything, they are good at hiding it! lol.
So they seemed excitedly surprised when we told them we had a little something for them before lunch, their cake choices, and heading out for an overnight surprise trip.
I love the expressions! triplets
{S} guessed out loud, “A BlackBerry?”, to which I laughed out loud and spontaneously replied with,
…..”YEAH RIGHT!!”
Then {O} said, “They’re I-Pods!”
Well, MP3 players of another brand.  Close enough. ; )
triplets
Then their big sister had a surprise of her own for them….
triplets
Catholic families
$5.00 each to I-Tunes!  Cool!
We did think ahead though, to load some music on to the players, the night before, and put their initials on them as well.  Because we knew they would have been persistent in asking us to do so,  if they couldn’t use them right away.
triplets
I just knew these little doo-dads were going to prove to be a BRILLIANT little idea.
They were THRILLED to have one of their own.  Even with the strict volume rules. ; )
And I’m telling you,  it was the QUIETEST…..
….LUNCH…..
EVER!!!
There is quite a bit more on their birthday celebrations coming up here, there, and who knows when.
We feel so blessed and full of thanks, and that’s always worth celebrating. A LOT!
P.S.  Do you have any song suggestions for 7 year olds? So far we’ve uploaded their VBS CD, and a few other choice songs. I’ve started a list of appropriate and positive/happy songs as I hear them. (Singles by Martina McBride, Bob Marley, and anything Christian/worship music…). Stuff with good messages, etc.  If you have ANY song suggestions for them we can load on these, we’d love to hear them!  When I get a longer list of ideas and suggestions, I’d be happy to share it here if everyone would like that.  After all, appropriate/positive/happy songs are great for ALL ages! : )
