Many of you probably already know that my husband, Michael, letters company trucks, does vehicle graphics and makes business signs. If you’re curious to see some of the kind of work he does, you can click on ‘Photography & Lettering’ in the menu above, and look to the bottom of that drop down menu, for ‘Truck Lettering’ and ‘Vehicle Graphics.’
Well, an interesting sideline that he has gotten into over the years, is refurbishing older green Massachusetts license plates.
Our own state of Massachusetts here, is actually the very first state in the United States, to issue motor vehicle license plates. It used to be that the plates only needed to be displayed on the back of the vehicle. Over the years, the state has been proactive in enacting laws regarding the registration and inspection of motor vehicles. The vehicle’s license plate(s) are assessed as part of the required vehicle inspections, and if the plates are old and/or damaged and are deemed unreadable by at least 60 feet, the vehicle owner is required to get new plates, before it receives a passed inspection sticker.
If a motor vehicle has been issued front and rear license plates, which is typical, the vehicle must display both license plates issued by the Registry of Motor Vehicles on the front and rear of the vehicle. Older plates that have the green lettering, which were the former standard and issued as a single plate, must only be displayed as that one plate on the back of the vehicles. In 1988, Massachusetts began issuing red-lettered plates, which are issued as a set of two. If the newer red-letter plates are issued to the vehicle registrar, both must be displayed on both the front and back of the vehicle. However, the single green-lettered plate is acceptable by law, for as long as it is readable.
It is for this reason, that Michael has refurbished an increasing amount of green-lettered plates. There are a host of reasons why some vehicle owners want to keep their older plate, for as long as possible. For some, it is just a somewhat sentimental reason. One 50-something year old man told Michael that he has had the same license plate since he was 18 years old, and he just doesn’t want to give it up. Others own hot rods, antique vehicles, or other show cars, and there is no place for a front plate, nor do they want it to ‘blemish’ the look of their car. Whatever the reason, if the plate is indeed salvageable, Michael is happy and capable of restoring them to their former beauty, if hired to do so.
Because it is a service he provides to aid in providing income for his family, he asked that I not show the whole step-by-step process. Still, I thought it might be an interesting little post, to share with you all the before and after of just one of his green-lettered Massachusetts license plate restoration jobs.
The condition of this particular plate when he received it, was a hot mess.
So the first thing he needs to do is strip the plate to bare metal and start from scratch.
Here it is, stripped. It’s still a little beat up and whatnot, but a good new place to start.
All restored. It is 100% reflective as needed as well, just as they were originally.

I am aware and amused, that he is often needing to clean things up and make them look like new, while I spend some of my days working to make things look old, beaten up and quite used.

Another very satisfied customer here chiming in. Just had my wife’s 30-ish year old green plate restored and the result is absolutely incredible. I had learned about Michael several years ago on local car enthisiast online message boards and knew that I’d have the plate restored “at some point”. Well, last year the inspector gave me a heads-up that the plate likely wouldn’t pass again. Even he gave me Michael’s contact information! I contacted Michael and after securing the use of a car for a week, arranged for the restoration. Just as promised, it took one week and we received it back this past Saturday. Got the car inspected and the restored plate passed. Ironically, he very same inspector who recommended Michael was surprised to see the plate look so good. He asked if I repainted it, because they don’t see them look like this. I just replied “Looks nice, doesn’t it?” I don’t trust the inspectors, but there really is no way they can tell it ever looked like a “before” photo. If you’re on the fence, get off and send your plate to Michael. He’ll make it look better than new.

I cannot stress enough what a great job Michael does with these plates. Truly a professional through and through.
When I first started driving and my car was registered in my parents’ name, I had a green plate on my car. That’s how it was for the first 5 or so years I drove. Recently I was able to get a green 5 digit reserve plate and reactivate the number. This sure brings me a kick of nostalgia every time I walk up to my car!
Sure looks a heck of a lot better than the one I had in 2005 did though!

I have almost the exact same story as Paul below. The plate that was issued to me in 1987 had become quite worn with age. I have had to avoid having inspections done at dealerships, as the last couple of times they have intended to fail my plate. I’ve been able to find independent inspectors who have been more flexible, but i know that such luck cannot last much longer. I heard via word of mouth a few months ago about Michael and his plate restoration service. A few weeks ago I was finally able to work the logistics to be without the plate for a week, and took the first step. The process went exactly as Michael’s email had explained.
I cannot sing high enough praises of the quality of the restored plate, and echo all of the positive comments already here. I would also comment (and echo the comments) that the before and after photos here perfectly depict the difference i have experienced.
Michael’s emails explaining the steps involved and how the process works are precise, thorough, and easy to follow.
I would most highly recommend Michael’s service to anyone considering plate restoration. Seeing the brand spankin’ new looking plate on your vehicle is guaranteed to bring some joy.

I got my green license plate in 1987 and it was in rough shape. They told me that going forward my car may not be able to pass inspection because of the condition it was in. When I got it back from Michael, it looked like a brand new plate that had just been issued by the RMV. Amazing. The before/after picture that is posted above is legit.

Take a leap of faith, and don’t wait a second longer to throw caution to the wind and have your treasured green plate restored by Michael! The incredible feeling you will get when you secure your restored plate to your vehicle will be indescribable. If you’re reading this, you are just like I was about it. I read every single review. I was a nervous wreck. Is this legit?? How will I get around and to/from work while it’s gone. My anxiety about it was off the charts.
But…. I wanted so desperately to keep my plate that I was willing to take a chance.
I honestly can’t think of anything in recent memory that has prompted such happiness and pride than having my 31-year-old green plate restored to its original glory. If you’re here, you have an unwavering passion to keep your plate, and the thought of relinquishing it makes you despondent (yeah, we’re that loyal).
There aren’t enough positive adjectives to describe the workmanship, care, and attention to detail that Michael puts into his craft. Michael was the consummate professional who was sensitive to my hesitation and cognizant of the extreme importance of a timely turnaround. I didn’t have the luxury of a 2nd vehicle available to me, and I had to rely on rides everywhere.
Michael was true to his word, and the plate arrived back in my hands in the timeframe relayed. And W-O-W, I was totally blown away. Words can’t adequately express my astonishment at the incredible restoration! You should have seen me running around my office proudly showing it to everyone (first I showed a “before” pix on my phone). Granted, many don’t “get it”, but a lot of people DO…. And you can tell by their wide-eyed wonderment and then palpable regret that they didn’t do that to their green plate before it was “taken away”.
You really know who “your people” are when it comes to the genuine adoration of a greenie <3
Right after I was done showing it off, I headed directly to get my (new to me) Jeep inspected, and my trusty boys at the garage were speechless at the workmanship. Did it pass inspection, you wonder? Heck YEAH!! Sooooo happy.

After my old Mass “green” plate failed Mass Inspection, I found Michael. He restored my old Mass “green” plate and it looks awesome. My customer experience was exceptional. More green plate news: Bought a new 2020 Honda. The dealer refused to do the inspection sticker because they feel the green plates are unsafe. A service guy told me there is a camera at both ends to look for 2 plates. They will reimburse you if you get it done somewhere else. BMW Peabody has no such problem. Google says there are 19 states that require only one plate. I supposed Honda refuses to sell cars in those states due to safety concerns. Yeah, right.
He fixed my greenie about 5 years ago. Came out great! Looked brand new. It’s starting to lose some luster so I’ll be touch later this year for a touch up. 😀

How did you transfer old plate to a new vehicle?
Just a regular transfer from one vehicle to another. If you were to cancel the plate and registration you would not be able to use them again. But a transfer from old vehicle to the new one , no poblem
If you haven’t transferred yet, on the rmv1 form, just make sure you are checking off transfer and nothing else.

I’ve had one of the old green letter Massachusetts plates since I first got a license (40+ years ago). Needless to say, it got terribly worn over the years. During my last couple of inspections, I was told that the plate was barely passable and not likely to pass next time around. I have always had pretty nice cars, and really like the fact that no front plate is required with the old green letter plate. Hoping to find a way to restore it, I found Michael through a simple Google search. I delivered my old beat-up plate to Michael on a Sunday afternoon and picked up the restored plate the following Friday. I was blown away by the quality of the work! It looks amazing…as good as the day I got it from the RMV 40+ years ago! For anyone interested in this service, Michael is the guy to go to!

Michael did an amazing job on my old green plate in the fall of 2019. Terric service.
The green plate on our other car does not need a fix up. This January we sold the old car and had no trouble transferring the plate to the new car.

Your comment is still there. I’m sorry you are personally having trouble transferring your registration. It’s the first I have heard of anyone being unable to do so.
If it is an already ACTIVE registration, you should be able to transfer it to the new vehicle, no problem. But you can cannot RE-register an old green plate that went INACTIVE for any reason. I just looked it up the law on the Mass (dot) Gov RMV site, and this has not changed. (I don’t want to give the direct link from here, but just use their search engine: ‘transfer plate to new car’. It very clearly states that you CAN, and any new announcements are always on their site.

Have a mass green plate that was inactive since 2011. Renewed the registration in April of 2019 after 8 years of inactivity with no problem. Now considering a restoration in hopes of assuring more useful years.

I’m told the Registry just announced that they will now reissue old green plates with the new red plates with the same number of your green plates. They would not do this previously. I’m told this is an option and they are not (yet) recalling the green and white plates. Do you have any insight on this?
Michael Soper – It’s true that they are not (yet) recalling green and white plates. However, as far as you being told the registry just announced that they will now reissue the same green number/letter sets on red plates….WHO told you this? I would have to say at this time that that is definitely misinformation. Any announcements by the RMV would be on their website, and there is no such announcement to be found. The only way I can figure they would even be able to make such an offer, would be by the way of vanity plates.

I have 2 active green plates that are in decent shape and has not had issues passing inspection.
Been trying ho have duplicates made or refurbished such as here.
I read in places that this is illegal and prohibited.
What is the real story? Can one be cited if stopped or can inspection stations fail the inspection?

Using duplicates plates you had made, on the road, would definitely be illegal. It would be considered ‘attaching false plates’. I believe it is fine to have duplicates made as keepsakes and in-house display.
Altering plates, would also be illegal. Altering would refer to changing letters and numbers to something other than they are.
What I do, is simply restore the plate to it’s original condition, and meeting all of the specifications required by the RMV to be a legal, passing plate.
All of my restored plates have gone on to pass inspection, and I have restored thousands by now. Furthermore, as a result of seeing my work coming in their stations, inspection stations all across the state of MA have been giving out my contact info, knowing my restorations pass inspections.
That is the real story, and I hope it helps. – Michael

Sent out my 1994 Pontiac Trans Am plate (original) to be refurbished as that was the only “Fail” on state inspection. It came back in 5 days, and I was SHOCKED! Looks brand new/original!
Great quality work at a very reasonable price. Saves me from drilling holes in the front of the car.

I’m not sure what I can say about Michael Richard, that hasn’t already been said;
without sounding like I have a man crush!~lol Let me just say, that he personifies
all of the traits and characteristics of a man that truly takes pride in all of his endeavors;
not to mention his unwavering devotion to his loving family, faith, unsurpassed work
ethic; and very obvious patience; despite his incredible work load.
As you all can see from his loving wife’s before and after photos, the quality of Michael’s
work is truly top notch. I was initially very trepidatious at the mere thought of my very
coveted green Massachusetts license plate getting lost in transit. After-all; I’ve had it for
38 years; ever since I got my very first car at age 16. I am 54 now. So yeah; it may seem silly to get so attached to a license plate; but I’m a sentimental guy. Hell; I still have my pink piggy bank that my great grandmother gave me when I was 3 months old!
But I digress; enough about me. Michael alleviated my concerns about shipping off my plate, by conveying a very impressive track record. Not one of the many thousands of green plates that he has restored has gotten lost in transit. In short; just follow Michael’s cordial instructions to the letter, and all will be copacetic. Copacetic John? Just Google it please. 🙂
I just received my plate today; and despite already seeing the exemplary quality of Michael’s finished product, I was still floored. My first thought was, I wish I had two of them; as I would love to frame it. One little detail that I had totally forgotten about over the decades, was the small green dot that’s in the middle of the numbers and letters. Once again; a great tribute to Michael’s knowledge, attention to detail and professionalism.
Lastly, Michael’s price for this labor intensive work of art, is in my opinion, a bargain. I’ve read every single comment; so please don’t be an insultive cheapskate, by trying to haggle with him over price. If he was charging twice as much, it would still be more then worth it. Please spread the word, as I intend to do.

I recently had Michael refurbish my plate and I cannot recommend him highly enough. He is a gentleman and a true professional in every sense of the word. Specifically, I was impressed by his excellent communication with me through email, by his detailed and organized process for submitting and retrieving the plate, and (of course) by his incredible craftsmanship. I had high hopes going into the process, and my expectations were exceeded.
We became aware of the plate situation when my wife took her car in for inspection; long story short, we were able to squeek by but would not pass again. I was about to surrender our plate (to which I have a sentimental attachment, as it was my first plate from my first-ever car) when my wife found Michael’s website and this article. There was a significant backlog, but we now had time before the next inspection. So I signed up, taking the risk that a stranger would take good care of this item of sentimental value, plus provide true and timely service.
We arranged a time slot for several months later and exchanged information in email. When the time came, Michael sent me a reminder notice; I enjoyed our correspondences and Michael answered all my questions quickly, clearly, and patiently. After I submitted the plate to him, it was ready in a timely manner (about a week). When I got the plate back I was stunned at what a beautiful job Michael did! I’d say it could pass for as good as, or better than, new. I inspected it from near and far; I tested it in light and dark, and I used a flashlight at a distance to check the reflectivity. Sure enough, it was as perfect as it could be.
I have one more plate, which is currently in better shape than the first old one, but I almost can’t wait to have Michael refurbish it when the time comes. I’ve also mentioned him to my friends and to my mechanic, and I’ll continue to refer him to folks in need of his special skills. He’s an honest person and a true artist, as well as gentleman. Just got my 27-year-old refurbished plate back. **MY JAW DROPPED!** I cannot believe how stunning the result is. Simply STUNNING!!! This plate is definitely going to last me another 27 years (but just to be sure, I purchased a protective clear cover for it – I don’t want anything to happen to this work of art). I posted my before and after photos on Facebook and, sure enough, within minutes four people asked for Michael’s info so they can get their plates refurbished, too. I am writing this comment after just having left my mechanic’s shop where 6 guys were scratching their heads in disbelief that my refurbished plate looked so great and that he had passed after failing inspection. Some were angry that they had not known about Michael because they had turned in plates themselves that they would have wanted to keep. Simply put, I would recommend Michael’s process and service to everyone. He keeps in good contact and his work is top notch. The color treatment on the plate is continuous edge to edge, the colors match what is expected, and the plate is reflective. My car has already been driven in weather and the process stood up. If you want to restore your plate, enlist Michael’s service in confidence.

All I can say is wow! I don’t know why I thought it would look fake, but it’s perfect. Very quick in replying to my email and again for my questions. Still need to get my inspection. My green plate is about 27 years old, and now it looks brand new! The paint for the green lettering has thickness to it and the white background is solid. Everything is just as reflective as a new plate. I couldn’t be happier with how my plate turned out.
I live 90 minutes away from Michael, and I had alternative transportation for the time I wouldn’t have my plate, so I chose to ship it both ways. I arranged everything with Michael in advance via email at Alphbtman@aol.com. Including in-state UPS Ground shipping both ways, I was without my plate for 7 days. Stellar service!

Mike, we are assure you, we would not be providing this service, if we were not absolutely certain of the legality of it. It would only be illegal to alter the numbers/letters of the plates, which we would never do. We only restore them to their original newness. Plates need to be readable and reflective from 60 ft. That’s the goal and the results. Also, I might mention that not only do inspection stations all over the state refer plate owners to us, but we refurbish plates for police and state police officers on a regualr basis.

Michael did an amazing job on my old green plate. It looks brand new and everyone is amazed that my plate is 45 years old! He was extremely responsive, trustworthy, and meticulous. The only downside is giving up your plate for a couple of days. I opted for overnight shipping and had it back in my hands in 6 days. His price is fair and well worth it. I am planning on having a second plate done in September.

I have an old Massachusetts blue-on-white “Spirit of America” motorcycle plate that is showing wear on the registration letters and number. I was told this week it will not pass inspection next year. Because it’s a single-digit plate I’d like to keep using it. Do you restore plates of this type?

Michael, I just picked up my and I am more than amazed. You are a true artist. I was in the graphic design and commercial paint business for many years and I can truly say I have not seen such attention to detail and level of quality in your work in a VERY long time. I have had this plate 32 of the 40 years the plate has been “in the family” and with the quality of the prep and the artistry of the finish I expect it to last at least another 40. Bravo!

Wow! What a fantastic restoration! It exceeded my expectations by a mile. My green plate was bent, letters pushed in, cracked and faded. In other words it looked terrible. Got a rush job and had the plate back as good as new in 5 days. If you have an old green Mass plate and you want to keep it so you do not have to put a plate on the front, then this is definitely the way to go! Dr. M

I just wanted to post – I just got my Green Plate back today from Michael and it looks AWESOME. I am so glad that I found this website and his service. The plate looks like NEW and I should hopefully have it for another 30 years!
I would recommend Michael’s work – I was a bit skeptical at first but checked with some of his other clients and they were very happy with his work and I am 100% completely satisfied.
We dropped the plate off at his house as I was concerned that with my luck the plate would get lost in the mail. But it was really easy and we went back a week later and it was PERFECT. Looks brand new.

In my case, the timing was right to do this: I got my new sticker from RMV. I kept it at home, sent Michael the plate that needed refurbishment and had it restored without trying to save the corner expiration sticker. There was a stack of 13 stickers (26 years’ worth) which were all removed. I had the whole job done, then when I received my restored plate, I put the new sticker on my plate’s new finish. Before the job, I emailed Michael with my concerns for matching the reflectivity of the background paint. He reassured me; then the job was done to my total satisfaction. Reproducing the properties of the original paint job were all absolutely perfect. Probably better than the original finish. The turn-around time was very good using regular mail. Well done! Highly recommended!

Michael just completed a Mass green plate restoration for me. I couldn’t be more pleased with the result. The plate looks fresh from the RMV, fully reflective as original, really an excellent job. And very fast turnaround, even during Christmas week! I highly recommend Michael’s work. Awesome!
I just emailed about getting my green plate refurbished. Went to get a sticker Sat and they said no! Have to give you reject and get new plates. I said nope and left with my Feb inspection sticker still there.

Michael’s work is fine art, all the way. I have a second car and used it while the plate was being refurbished. He’s legit! I got the plate back in about 2 weeks with no special shipping arrangements. In addition to the agreed price, the shipping is about $2.50 each way if you provide your own cardboard envelope, up to a little under $6 each way if you buy a new stiff envelope from USPS. Always, many people, like me, will value anything that’s not being made new any more.
Mr Richard politely answered several questions I had by email. I’ll spare both the potential customer and him from this FAQ: Yes, he uses reflective materials that are indistinguishable from the original. Of course, it must look identical to the plate as it was when new. It does, and in my opinion it will last longer than the first original finish because of the quality of the restoration work and materials. (The originals were probably made by prisoners of the state.)
WELL DONE! No longer available new, the single plate may even allow a slight reduction in air drag and patriotically save energy! IMPORTANT NOTE: The state gives inspection stations a broad discretionary power to withdraw your worn plate from circulation with willy-nilly authority, and when they do, you CAN’T get a single-plate replacement. They’re allowed to do this simply by opinion, or if they just feel like it. Who needs the hassle, even when they are clearly wrong?! “Attaching Plates” that aren’t registered, is, of course, illegal. But many of us Mass. motorists get “attached” to our Classic, discontinued style of license plate. Absolutely top quality workmanship and materials. Based on my experience, I’m certain Mr Richard’s standard sign business is also of the highest quality. I have a relative out of state who paints commercial vehicles and company logos and information on them for a living, with a degree from the prestigious NYC School of Visual Arts (“SVA”), and he’d greatly admire this professional quality work.

Your really made this plate look brand new. I just wanted to tell everyone out there that has an old plate that is beat up looking and worn and cracked and paint faded and numbers and letters can hardly read and in need of refurbushing, go to this website and deal with Mike. I have a vanity plate that has to be at least 15 years old and it was in pretty rough shape, the back white was all cracked and the reflective paint was almost all off the numbers and letters and had to use enamel paint to at least put some color back on the letters and number so it was somewhat readable. Looked around for someone to refurbish my plate and came across this website. Thank You Laura for giving me Mike’s e-mail so I could reach out to him about my plate. He is wonderful to do business with. Such a nice man and by the way, he has beautiful kids. Nice work! I just got rejected while getting an inspection sticker because of a degraded green plate. The tech at the station stated that refurbishing a mass green plate was in fact illegal. Just saying….

We have researched the legality of the manner in which we are refurbishing these plates, and have yet to find any information that confirms that it is illegal to have a refurbished green plate. What the information HAS stated is that the RMV wants to replace plates that are damaged, worn or generally not clearly readable from a distance of 60 feet. They definitely frown upon people touching up their own plates using paint, nail polish, and other mediums that are not suitable. The reason for that, is because those mediums are not reflective at night.
The refurbishing that we do meets all of the same required specifications of a brand new green plate. The entire background and numbers/letters are in fact reflective and can be easily read at night beyond the required distance. After refurbishing, these plates are as good as a brand new green MA plate.
The RMV is encouraging all inspection stations to fail vehicles with old, illegible and damaged plates, for public safety reasons, as well as not being able to be seen well on toll and security cameras. Which is perfectly understandable, and we are on the same page as they are, to keep worn out plates off of the road. There are many people who are very attached to their green plates for various reasons. Our refurbishing is very high-quality restoration of the original plate appearance. Nothing is being altered!! (Which is indeed illegal). Of the countless green MA plates we have refurbished and restored to their original appearance thus far, not one client has contacted us and said their vehicle was rejected for their refurbished plate. This communicates to us that even the inspectors cannot tell the difference. So, we are sorry your vehicle was rejected due to the poor condition of your plate. If you would like us to refurbish it for you, and see how it goes, we’d be happy to serve you.

I happen to find this website by searching the internet for license plate refurbishing and came across this. What a nice familly. You can see the love in this household which is awesome to see. I see the work Michael the husbancd did on an old plate and how he made that look brand spanking new. I would like him to do this for my plate. I have had my plates for 20 years and dont want to give it up, because when you turn in plates that are faded you don’t get the same number back, they issue you a new number, plus I have vanity plates that I want to keep the way the were back from when I first got them. Wow! What a transformation! And yes, it is funny that you spend your days making things old, while he does the opposite! (I loved the green plates when I was living in Boston, so I’d be in the camp that doesn’t want to give them up!)

Actually, we never had a car until we moved to our current location! All the time in Boston and then Philly, we either walked, took the T or the bus. I rode the T daily for many years while going to school in Boston and then a job thereafter! (I just liked the look of the green & white plates when I lived there!)
Oh ok, see, that does not surprise me much, Laura K. You don’t really need a vehicle most times in Boston, and I know parking is so limited too. You know what? Since I couldn’t afford a car in my senior year of high school, and then went to art school in Boston from there, I did not even bother getting my license until I was 21! I was terrified learning to drive by then, but got comfortable quickly enough to get a speeding ticket on the Mass Pike, only 4 months later. LOL
